In 1986, following more than a decade of research and development, Honda introduced its new luxury division to the North American market: Acura. This brand maintains the distinction of being the first Japanese luxury brand in automotives. In its first few years of sales, Acura immediately became a best-selling marquee automobile in the United States. Honda promoted the new brand under the slogan “Acura. Precision Crafted Performance.”
In any market, an exceptional brand needs a recognizable logo that arrests the eye, establishing a connection between the symbol and company it represents. Honda uses a stylized “H.” This led to the popular belief that Acura, in the same manner of Honda, uses a stylized “A” as its logo; however, the logo finds its meaning in a theme established by the company. It all begins with the name of the brand itself.
“Acu” is a word segment that, across many languages, means “precise.”
Precise (adj) – marked by exactness and accuracy of expression or detail.
Building upon this theme, the Acura logo became a stylized pair of calipers, which is a tool utilized for exacting measurements. It represents the brand’s commitment to excellence and precision with which Acura model’s are designed, engineered and built.
